greg, i think we all know who wrote sendmail.  and while it's been a
while since i was on a sendmail machine, i recall that if it wasn't
compiled with -DEBUG, it had a tendency to complain about its inability
to open the console upon each invocation.

ps:  i'm not, of course, advocating that eric be imprisoned.  i don't
think i've ever seriously done that.
