I just got off the phone with John Markhoff of the NY Times. I faxed him a copy
of my posting on the difference between a worm and a virus, and he has indicated
that he has talked with various people who continue to disagree about what to call
this. Jon Shoch, one of the authors of the original worm paper, believes that
intent governs the determination of the name, and as such this was a virus!

Anyhow, John asked to be added to this mailing list. I told him that would be
up to all of you. He promised that he would not print anything obtained from the
list without prior approval of the author(s) involved. I indicated that I would
not add him to the list if there was significant negative reaction from any
of the current members of the list.

Let me know what you think.

If you have some comments you wish passed along to John, let me know
and I will forward
them. However, I will not reveal his net address at this time (unless he gives
me approval to do so).

On another note, I have an archive of all messages to this list since
it started, thanks
to Dan Trinkle. If you need a copy, let me know and I will see what I
can arrange in
terms of getting a copy to you.
